August Currently:)

I can hardly believe that it is August!!  

Wow.  The summer is just flying by!  

I am just thankful that it is not B2S time for me yet! :)  There is only one thing to do on the 1st of the month...link up with the FAB Farley from Oh' Boy 4th Grade for the new Currently!

Listening:  HGTV is my go to channel for background noise.  Love some home reno!

Loving: I can hardly believe that I figured it out!  Well, thanks to Jivey's awesome tutorial linked up to Ms. Fultz!!  I made a fan freebies tab on my facebook page.  I am especially proud that I figured out how to make a custom cover for the tab using ppt all on my own.  I'll pat myself on the back for something checked off this to-do list!  Hopefully, I can update the freebies often! :)

Thinking: Yeah, no brainer there but that is really what I am thinking right now!  I won't freak out that I have so much to do...I won't freak out

Wanting: We have our annual (60+ years) family reunion this weekend that lasts Saturday at 3 pm until Sunday at 5 pm.  It is a lot of fun in the woods at a cabin and a pond to boot!  In my kids' age groups alone, there are five boys who are three years old and five girls who are six years old!  I am organizing kids' games this year and I just finished the baskets for prizes last night!  It will be fun!! 

Needing: I finally have a day to go into my room tomorrow and get some work done.  First we are having a team meeting to discuss a possible change next year.  I'll let you know once it is "official"!

B2s Must Haves: I always have to add more books to my classroom library each year.  As far as new organizer thingamabobs, I am always adding those too in the hopes that I will be SO much more organized each year than I left things the year before!  A new pair of shoes is a must have too...preferably comfortable ones!!  It is rough going from flip flops for two months to "real shoes!".

Oh, ONE more thing that I am "Loving" is our puppy, Porter!  We have had him almost 3 weeks now and he is such a B.A.B.Y.  I can't go anywhere without taking him along because 1) he is just so cute and 2) he is a baby and you never know what trouble he might find.  

Isn't he adorable?  When he is tired, he just lays where ever you put him like the pic on the right:)

July Currently!! My favorite month of the year!

It's almost July!!  You know how after your first week of vacation it feels like you have been on vacation much longer?  Or the opposite, after your first week back at work, it feels like you never left?  Well, I am in that happy place where my vacation has just started and it is not even July yet:)  Sometimes the calendar falls so that the first week of vacation is the week of July 4th but this year we were out June 21st and had all last week off before the week of the 4th this year!!!  I wonder if that means we have a whole extra week of summer vacation?  Wahoo!

Today I am linking up with the fabulous, my blog crush, Farley from Oh 'Boy Fourth Grade (see, she even teaches the same GRADE as me!) for the Currently monthly party!  July is my favorite month of the year because summer has just started for me and it is the month of my birthday and wedding anniversary (and, since last year, blogiversary!).  The only thing I don't like about July is the humidity here in New York.  Here is my currently:

Listening:  House Hunters is my show of choice at night when I just want some background noise. I started this post last night and was too exhausted to finish.  Speaking of House Hunters, my little sister and her hubs just bought their first house!  I spent all day Friday "skimming" with joint compound two walls in their kitchen that were not very appealing.  I also taped and mudded a huge crack that went all the way across the ceiling.  Then, I cut in and painted what I could of the rest of the kitchen and helped my mom paint a spare bedroom.  I started at 10:30 am and left at 10:00 pm.  On Saturday, the whole family went up and while my nephew watched the kids, my hubs (Paul) helped them move furniture in and I sanded the walls and ceiling (if you have ever worked with joint compound, you KNOW what a mess that is!).  Then, I finished painting the kitchen. It looks fabulous!  Next...we took off to meet our new puppy for the first time!  Which brings me (out of order) to...

Wanting:  We can't wait to bring little Porter home in two weeks.  He is such a happy little guy and his tail was just wag wagging as fast as that little thing could move. I could just snuggle with that little tiny face for hours.  The hubs was pleased with himself because he got the first little kiss from Porter. :)  Here is the little guy:

Loving:  Yep, finally took the plunge and got an iPhone 4.  People told me that I wouldn't know how I could have lived without it.  They were right! LOVE!!

Thinking:  My iPhone was my "Happy Birthday to Me!" present.  Since my birthday is next week, followed by my One Year Blogiversary on July 9th (Yay!), I am thinking of a little somethin' somethin'  to celebrate!!  I appreciate the blogging world SO much and it will be my way of saying thank you to all of you!!!  I'm not sure of the details yet but stay tuned!

Needing:  It needs to be done.  This Wednesday I am going in.  Wish me luck.

Tips, Tricks, or Hints:  Don't take it personally.  This is the mantra that I live by (although I have to remind myself of it often!).  Whether it is blogging or TPT or life in general, when something doesn't happen the way you envisioned, don't take it personal.  

Share your ideas and stories and feel good about it.  

You can't please everyone but the positive BY FAR outweighs any negative.  

We all know we can have hurt feelings in this blogging/TPT world (i.e...Hey! No one commented on my blog post!  or That comment on TPT is really irritating!).  

But at the end of the day, you are sharing your passion for teaching and learning with (mostly) strangers and building awesome relationships.  

Don't let the little stuff wear you down.  

Also, take breaks from blogging and don't let it consume you (thanks, Farley!).  

Look around at your family and friends and take the time to enjoy what you have been blessed with.

Mentor Text (The Raft) and Currently!

Are you on summer vacation and already working hard looking for materials for next year?  I am not on summer vacation yet but Amanda and Stacia's awesome mentor text linky is so organized that I can go back anytime and keep adding texts to my must-read list!  I am really looking forward to some extra blog reading time during summer vacation (just 3 weeks away!).  Check out their linky this week.  Topic: Language Arts

The mentor text I am sharing today is one of the stories from our reading series, McMillan McGraw Hill's Treasures.  

Although I only use the reading series about once or twice every two months, there are some wonderful texts here accompanied by great resources for teaching certain skills.   One of my favorite stories from our textbook is The Raft.  It is nice to use the reading series when I find a great text to share because the students can each have a copy of the text in front of them when using the books.  The Common Core standards emphasize referring back to the text for SPECIFIC details.  This is making it difficult to not provide the class with individual copies of a text and still practice the types of questions students will be assessed on during "the TEST".

I have made many of these computer investigation worksheets to accompany themes that we are exploring with texts.  Here is one where students can explore different types of animals and answer questions.  

Download this worksheet for students to investigate more animals using the National Geographic website.  I noticed that the margins are off in Dropbox but you should be able to edit the margins in Word once it is downloaded.  You can also edit the directions.  I have a website through Quia.com where I provide links to all my computer investigations.

Thinking my daughter's birthday party was a success!  Here she is getting her nails painted at a "Little Diva Day Spa!"  It was totally low stress for me and the girls had a blast!!

Wanting the next three weeks to be over with but also wanting to enjoy the last weeks with my students!  I love my class this year and will be sad to see them go:(

Needing to write up my lesson plan from my unannounced walkthrough observation on Thursday.  I also have to submit 24 artifacts for domains one and four of the Danielson rubric.  They are mostly done but I need to double check and add a few things.  I am procrastinating...

I did make these handy organizers to keep my binder organized if you want to check them out.  There is also a version for the TED rubric.

Workshop Wednesday, Month Ahead, and Currently!!

I apologize for all the link ups in one post!!  I just want to participate in all of these great linky parties and I won't be blogging again until at least Saturday.  I am working in my room the rest of the day today and then we are headed for a little mini getaway to a water park that is 45 minutes away.  We are spending the night in a hotel for two nights with the kiddos!  They are SO excited.  When your kids are only ages 5 and 3, staying in a hotel just 45 minutes away is like another world to them:)

This week's topic is math websites.

There are so many great sites out there (many of them FREE!) but the one I use often costs money. Our school pays for a subscription to Castle Learning.  

There are free trials offered but I am not sure if individual teachers can sign up for the trial.

If your school does have grant funds or budget money for technology, this site is definitely worth looking into.  

I use it primarily with my AIS (academic intervention services) students.  With RTI (response to intervention), we are required to keep a lot of data!  This website differentiates instruction by common core standards and is such a helpful tool.

Here is a snapshot of an assignment's results by math CCSS (these are the AIS students only...sometimes the results can be quite scary).  

Red means that less than 65% of students mastered that standard.

Here is another snapshot of questions missed by each student for the assignment (names are not in the picture).

When students are working on an assignment, they can have the questions read to them.  This is great for my students who struggle in math that also have reading deficits.  This option can also be disabled by the teacher.

 The computer gives students hints if they answer the question incorrectly and prompts them to try again.  After students answer each question, there is an explanation and work shown for how to solve the problem.  I require my students to show their work and correct wrong answers on their scrap paper to turn in.

There are so many possibilities that you just have to check out if you think your district would be interested!

Looking Forward To:  I am looking forward to an overnight scrapbooking retreat with my friends on April 19th!  I am far behind in scraping (just like everything else!) and this will be some wonderful girl time after a week of state tests:)
Dreading:  The two weeks of state assessments.  I get so worked up and this year is supposed to be particularly difficult for my poor students who have worked so hard.  Enough said!
Accomplish:  Get some scrapbooking done, finish another TPT product, organize my pile of kid's "memorabilia" collecting dust in the laundry room!

I am loving my "staycation" and getting some much needed work done at home.  

I also love the quality time with my own kiddos:)  

Sometimes when I go somewhere for vacation, I arrive home even more tired!  This wouldn't have worked well because I am already still worn down from this sinus infection that just won't go away.  I am on my second antibiotic and I feel somewhat better so I know it is working.  However, it is not going away!! Ugh!  I need some sunshine and warmer temperature I think:)  

Just do what you do best is my advice.  I often tell myself this and it makes me feel so much better when I am overwhelmed.  If I just concentrate on doing what I do best, everything else falls into place.  Everyone has their strengths!

Natural Disasters Projects, Currently, and NY:)

Can you believe that it's March?  Wow!  I am linking up with the fabulous Farley (my blog crush:) from Oh' Boy Fourth Grade for her Currently.  I love reflecting on what is happening "right now".

We are heading out within the hour to go to one of our favorite seasonal spots.  It is only open during maple syrup season.  They serve all you can eat pancakes and sausage with their own maple syrup.  Yummy!  It is set in the boonies (most places around here are when you live in towns with one to zero traffic lights!).  We love the cozy log cabin atmosphere and fire:)  

Vacation cannot come soon enough...two weeks off starting March 23, then we come back to two weeks of ELA and math state tests.  I am looking forward to them just being done!

I like honesty!! You cannot imagine what little fibbers we have experienced this week in 4th grade!  My goodness!  Do they really think we were born yesterday?  geesh...

I love my honey!  We have used this term since we started dating in 1996 and it has stuck.  There are different tones of "honey"...elated, excited, angry, tearful, you get the idea...My roommates in college used to always pick on our different "honey" voices!

I hate HOT summer days.  If it could be NY fall weather all the time, I would be so happy (another "H" word!).  The humidity in NY can be just unbearable and exhausting in the summer.  We do not have central air (not a staple in NY), so those sleepless HOT nights can be torture!

NEXT...The natural disasters projects were quite a success!  The students enjoyed presenting them and it was a great learning experience incorporating much "rigorous" nonfiction text.  

Since I had some interest in my materials for the project, I have revamped them to put on TPT.  From now until tomorrow morning, you can get the 10 page packet of materials from TPT as a flash freebie!  After that, the pack will be $2.50.  It is a culminating project and addresses so many common core standards.

January Currently! Yay!!

I have a little downtime this morning to link up with the amazing Farley at Oh' Boy Fourth Grade for the January Currently!  I love this linky:)

Most of my thoughts today revolve around what has been going on in our house the entire Christmas break...sickness!!  ugh!

It started with...Strep throat for my 5 year old

Ear infection and nasty cold for my 2 year old

Stomach bug (down for 2-3 days) went through 10 people in my family at Christmas

We thought we were in the clear (only felt a little funny for a couple days)...

Then, had another get together and my 5 year old and myself were up all night Monday night with the stomach bug

So, we are still down but improving quickly...

My daughter is laying on the couch watching Disney Jr. (poor girl...she hates missing school)

I am loving my coffee this morning because I haven't had anything to eat or drink besides water for two days.

I had to take the day off work and we have the students coming back today....missing them:(

I am thankful for the extra day to actually get those essays graded that I have been putting off and didn't get to because of the sickness.

My One Little Word is TODAY.

I want to focus on loving the journey, not the destination.

This is not a dress rehearsal and TODAY is the only guarantee you get.

If I follow this motto, everything else just falls into place:)

December Currently:)

I still cannot believe it is December!  It definitely doesn't feel like it since today was 50+ degrees in NY!  Living in an area that receives an average of 200" of snow a year, this weather sure does make the winter (well, fall) really fly by!  It is amazing how much easier your day is when you don't have to worrying about scraping your car, putting snow boots on the kids, and driving in low visibility up a huge hill to work in the morning!  

Anywho...I know many of you do not experience the lovely joys of lake effect snow...This is the December Currently from the wonderful, Farley at Oh' Boy Fourth Grade (LOVE her!).

I really do love this time of the year but the hustle and bustle wears me out!  I always get sick around Christmas (gee, I wonder why?) but I am trying to make a good effort to get things done early and go to bed at a decent hour each night.  

My shopping is just about done and I have checklists for cookies, cards, and present wrapping.  I am not usually so neurotic but there is something to be said for schedules:)  Every year I make about six kinds of cookies and give out tins to all our neighbors and my buddies at work.  Last year I tried making the dough during the week and freezing it.  Then, on the weekends when Christmas was close, I would only have to bake the cookies!  It was SO much easier that way!!  I don't know why I never thought of that before:)

I finally ordered an "Elf on the Shelf" for my kiddos at home.  They are only going to be this little for a short time and I just secretly want to see their little expressions when they see that elf!  hehe:)  

I have thought about introducing the elf to my 4th graders but my group is pretty skeptical this year.  The "desk fairy" appears every so often and they have been relentless in asking questions!  One student came up to me a few weeks ago and said, "The desk fairy needs to come soon!  Hint, hint!"  This boy has a great sense of humor and I couldn't help myself.  I just started cracking up!  At least he said it when not many others were around to hear because there are a few that are believers.

November Currently and DBQs!!

What a week!  I was home Monday with a sick daughter, Tuesday we had no school due to Sandy (some lost power and downed trees but no real damage, thank you Lord!), Wednesday was a crazy, rainy Halloween, Thursday was busy preparing for a substitute before a workshop all day Friday!  I'm telling you...I really do need that retail therapy next weekend and today to get my thoughts in order.  Here is the November Currently from the A.MA.ZING! Farley at Oh' Boy Fourth Grade:

I spent most of my free time yesterday updating my DBQs (Document Based Questions) that I created years ago for ancient civilizations when I taught sixth grade.  They just looked so "blah" on TPT so I jazzed them up some:)  It took a long time but I am happy how they turned out (and I LOVE the screenshot tool on my Mac).  Here is a sampler of the Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome DBQs.

The Common Core is really stressing the reading of informational text and drawing from primary and secondary sources.  When I updated these to include the CCSS, I was amazed at how well they aligned.  If you teach ancient civilizations, I have six DBQs (Egypt, Jerusalem, China, Greece, Rome, Middle Ages) for sale here at my TPT or here on TN.  Our state has the drafts out for our "modules" for ELA and math.  They are like units to guide your yearlong instruction to align with the Common Core.  All the modules are social studies content except one science module.  Does your state have modules (units) for the CCSS as well and are they mostly social studies or science content?

I love to have my students listen to music during free time.  They love popular songs that they can sing to and it is great to see this happy, free side of them.  We have dance parties all the time and sometimes the students who you thought would never dance are the best dancers!!

Now, for the October Currently from my blog crush, Farley at Oh' Boy Fourth Grade!

So, I am loving my new MacBook Pro but was definitely heartbroken when mine crashed Thursday night!  I knew it was getting bad after 8 loving years.  When I went to restart it after it froze (happened often), the hard drive just kept clicking and then a gray file folder appeared on a white screen with a question mark in the middle of it.  NOT GOOD!  I had most things backed up on a flash drive BUT most of the ELA work I downloaded blogging this summer is gone:(  I didn't have enough space on my flash drive (go figure!) and just got a new 8GB and was planning on backing it up this weekend (doesn't it always happen that way?).  I have one last hope...our computer guy is taking the computer to try one last retrieval of anything from the hard drive...fingers crossed!!

I really want to get my scrapbooking stuff organized and get something done but life is in the way (and my new hobby of blogging!).  

You should see the stack of papers I am behind in grading...yikes!  I literally cannot grade anything at school during my preps.  Every minute is spent copying, planning, getting absent work together, etc.  We are really feeling the crunch with cut staff.

The book, Fancy Nancy Thanksgiving Banquet, is one of my 5-year old daughter's new favorites for the Fall.  I love the Fancy Nancy books and all the neat vocabulary she uses.  My daughter loves the illustrations and Nancy's clothes:)

Ready or Not Classroom REVEAL!!...and Currently

Whew!!  My classroom is as ready as it will ever be!  I am so proud of all the changes I made from being inspired by all of you!  I am linking up with the Teaching Blog Addict for Open House week and  Swimming Into Second linky party:

Here is my owl themed door that was inspired by other owl doors on pinterest.  Of course, there is the welcome sign that I made too.  You can read about it here.  The white sign is designating my room as peanut and tree nut free.

This is the view as you enter the classroom door.  My room is really not very big and there is not much wall space compared to some of the classrooms I have seen.

This is a view of my windows with my no-sew curtains and owl table skirt that I made with a hot glue gun.  You can read about that project here.  The table is all ready with the bin for my crayfish that will be arriving next week:)

 My chapter books are arranged by genre and the AR level is written on the color coded stickers (taped on bindings).

This is my homework board, schedule, teacher's helpers, and math meeting helper board.  I love the new owl subject headers that I laminated for the homework chart.

The editable schedule cards that I created turned out great!  I used the schedule pocket chart I already had.  I printed, cut and glued the cards on colored cardstock before laminating.  There is a space in the chart because 3 days of the week I have two specials in that time slot, not just one.  You can get the editable schedule cards here at my TPT store!

I am really bummed that my daughter will be starting Kindergarten tomorrow and I won't be able to see her get on the bus or walk in the classroom...sniff, sniff:(  I would have to take a 1/2 day personal day on my student's first day too and I really need to save my three days for field trips, parent conferences, and Kindergarten graduation.  My school day starts at 7:40 and hers starts at 9:00 (in a different town).  

I am so glad that they had a meet and greet last week and I met her teacher and toured the classroom!  My husband will be meeting her at the bus stop and again at her class to take pictures.  At least she is so excited and never cried for PreK.  She LOVES SCHOOL (I wonder where she gets that from?...hehe).

On another note, I can't wait for all the season premieres...especially Revenge!  Season premieres are one of the many reasons fall is my favorite season:)
